Certifiably greener

bpi.films, the UK’s leading manufacturer of shrink, stretch and converter films, has recently gained formal certification as to the greener nature of one of its newest products. The film, which comes from the manufacturer’s Integr8 biopolymer range and which has been promoted since its introduction as being fully compostable, has just secured two ‘OK Compost’ conformity marks from AIB-Vincotte – one of the world’s foremost providers of quality, safety and environmental inspection and certification services.

The first mark – OK Compost – was awarded to the product in thickness up to 100 microns (mµ) and highlights its suitably for composting, particularly in industrial sized facilities. The second – OK Compost Home – was awarded to the product in thicknesses up to 66 mµ and guarantees it can be composted by anybody, including individual householders.

Both marks are significant because achieving them involves passing stringent tests based on the latest pan-European standards and/or the guidance of various multi-national working parties. To ensure continued compliance, production methods are also regularly monitored by AIB-Vincotte, which itself is a totally independent, third party organisation.

Speaking of the certification, Mark Vernon, Commercial Director at bpi.films, said: “We launched the Integr8 range, which consists of compostable and biodegradable films, as part of our commitment to minimising the environmental impact of all our products. As these films are deliberately designed to breakdown, their purpose is to complement rather than replace our existing, conventional polymer products and to offer our customers a greener alternative where applications permit. To date, such applications have included the creation of biodegradable bubble wrap and of compostable carrier bags.

“We’re confident that receiving the OK Compost and OK Compost Home certificates will help to build on this popularity. At a time when both organisations and individuals are increasingly aware of the need for greater sustainability, they help to boost the green credentials not just of the certified film, but of any product it is used to package or produce. We’re now hoping to achieve the OK Biodegradable mark for the remaining films in the Integr8 range.”
