| Following on from the launch of its degradable bubble-wrap earlier this year PH Flexible Packaging has expanded its eco-friendly range with the introduction of ‘Compost-a-Bubble’, a compostable bubble-wrap product. Produced using compostable film from BPI, Compost-a-Bubble meets EN13432, the European composting standard which is used as a reference point for public authorities, industrial composting operators and consumers. BPI has been leading the way in the development of biopolymer and compostable films to meet the growing demand for such products and is now applying this technology across a range of packaging applications. The EN13432 standard, which conforms to the European Directive 94/62 EC on packaging and packaging waste, defines the speed at which a compostable film must completely biodegrade and the eco-toxicity levels of the resulting compost. At the end of its use ‘Compost-a-Bubble can be discarded into industrial composting facilities where it will break down with the rest of the green waste leaving no harmful residue. ‘Compost-a-bubble’ offers the same protective properties as traditional bubble wrap products but has the added advantage of being a controlled life product making it ideal for those businesses with composting facilities. This new product is ideal for retailers who require an environmentally friendly protective wrapping for items such as fruit, vegetables or flowers which enable them to dispose of any unsold product and packaging as a single item. PH Flexible has already placed the new product in the marketplace and has received positive feedback on its performance. Currently available in a 1500mm width they are now reviewing the production of smaller sized reels. Paul Horobin, Managing Director at PH Flexible Packaging, commented: “We are delighted to be of assistance to those businesses who are seeking eco-friendly packaging for particular applications.” He continued: “Our strong working relationship with bpi.films is helping us to stay a step ahead in the production of these products.” Commenting on the new product, Mark Vernon, Commercial Director at bpi.films, said: “The development of biopoIymer and compostable films which complement our broad range of recyclable polythene products, is now providing businesses with a further choice of packaging solutions. All our packaging options support ongoing industry initiatives which seek to strike a balance between extending shelf life and the practicalities of using eco-friendly products for specific retail applications.” Established in 1986, PH Flexibles has been pioneering the development of protective packaging and mailing products. The business converts bubble and foam wrap into bags, sheets and packaging for a wide range of industries including automotive, horticultural, electrical and pharmaceutical. As a business, PH Flexible Packaging has always taken a proactive approach to environmental issues, receiving both Silver and Bronze Enviromark Awards in recent years for their continuing work towards improving the environment. They have achieved these awards through initiatives such as reducing waste by over 50%, using recycled paper for product labels, sponsoring a tree planting campaign in support of the National Forest and introducing a Waste Watchers programme on-site to recycle office and canteen products.
