Bubble-wrap - the green alternative

In response to the growing demand for environmentally conscious products, packaging and mailing products manufacturers, PH Flexible have developed a new degradable bubble-wrap called ‘Degrade-a-Bubble®’ with the help of leading polythene manufacturer, bpi.films.

‘Degrade-a-Bubble®’ is made using a new bpi.films degradable film which has recently been launched to the market. Offering the same properties as traditional bubble-wrap but with the added benefit of being degradable, the end product is available in 1.5 metre, 500 mm and 750 mm rolls.

bpi.films developed their degradable film to help meet the demand for greener films in the marketplace. Their product has been designed and blended to speed up the degradation of the finished film so that eventually it will be fragment and break down completely due to the effects of normal heat and light conditions in the waste stream.

Paul Horobin, Managing Director at PH Flexible Packaging commented: “It is becoming increasingly important to consider how our products will affect the environment and this new product from bpi.films will enable us to develop new, greener products. We have recently received feedback from several customers, who all found the film to be of exceptional quality.”

Established in 1986, PH Flexibles has been pioneering the development of protective packaging and mailing products. The business converts bubble and foam wrap into bag, sheets and packaging for a wide range of industries including automotive, electrical and pharmaceutical.

As a business PH Flexible Packaging has always taken a proactive approach to environmental issues receiving both Silver and Bronze Enviromark Awards in recent years for their continuing work in improving the environment. They have achieved these awards through initiatives like reducing waste by over 50%, using recycled paper for product labels, sponsoring a tree planting campaign in support of the National Forest and introducing a Waste Watchers programme on-site to recycle office and canteen products.

Commenting on the new product, Mark Vernon, Commercial Director at bpi.films said: “Our new degradable film does not change the quality and durability of the end bubble wrap product but it does make it better for the environment. PH Flexible Packaging is a key customer and we are really pleased that their new bubble wrap has already been a success.

“As a business, we invest a great deal in the research and development of our products. We look forward to announcing the development of more new, exciting products.” he adds.
